extraordinary? what's so great about that?

ex·traor·di·nar·y

/ikˈstrôrdnˌerē/
Adjective
  1. Very unusual or remarkable.
  2. Unusually great.
Synonyms

uncommon - unusual - singular - remarkable - exceptional

Strange.

Wouldn't the word extraordinary mean something that is very ordinary or more ordinary.
I don't understand how it means uncommon or unusual.

Extra = more

Moreordinary
How does moreordinary = uncommon?

If anything it should mean more ordinary than ordinary (very dull, plain, boring.)

But yet it doesn't.

A size more small than small = extra-small
More large than large = extra small
Hot sauce more hot = extra hot!!!

But then why doesn't More Ordinarily than ordinary = extra-ordinary.

If anything if should be used as a put down or as sarcasm not a complement.
Some examples:
"Hey Jonny, I heard you got last place...Your an extraordinary runner!"
Falling asleep during sex, "That was extraordinary..."
That girl from American Beauty, Instead of calling her plain and boring. Just use "extraordinary"

Exibit A:

Ordinary Fat Kid:

Extraordinary Fat Kid:

--Notice how the Ordinary fat kid is more interesting than the Extraordinary fat kid.---

(no offense to the over weight, i've been there too.)

Well my extraordinary ability to focus is wearing thin.
until next time.

have a nice day.
